Spoilers For The Marvel’s Agents Of SHIELD Season 4 Finale Follow

Avengers: Infinity War is set to be the most epic film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. Practically every major player Marvel Studios character, from the Avengers to Spider-Man, to the Guardians of the Galaxy, will be involved in defending the Earth from the threat of Thanos, the Mad Titan.

This is a cosmic threat, which is how the Guardians of the Galaxy come into play, but where would the Agents of SHIELD fit in? It’s easy to imagine that SHIELD would be involved in the planetside defense of Earth against the minions of Thanos, but the Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season four finale suggests there could be a larger role for Phil Coulson and his team.

In the finale, the agents of SHIELD are paralyzed by a device used by a mysterious government agent and taken into custody by soldiers under the agent’s command. Following that, Phil Coulson wakes up somewhere in space and starts his day as if this is his regular routine.

That final scene seems to suggest that Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD‘s fifth season will send Coulson’s team to outer space. The finale offered no clues as to what Coulson has been up to while off-world, but perhaps it has something to do with the coming war with Thanos.

There are numerous ways this story could set up and play out. Perhaps Coulson is investigating a growing army under Thanos’s command. Maybe he’s searching for one or more of the Infinity Stones. Maybe he’s actually been working for SWORD the whole time. Or maybe the SHIELD team will be on a completely unrelated space mission and end up embroiled in the war with Thanos by happenstance.

We can’t say anything for sure, but we do know that Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD spun directly out of the events of the first Avengers and tied into Avengers: Age of Ultron as a kind of prolog. Perhaps Agents of SHIELD‘s fifth season will lead directly into the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will move to a new day and time, Fridays at 9 p.m. on ABC. The show’s fifth season will premiere sometime after the airing of the eight-episode Marvel’s Inhumans series.
