Black Panther is projected to earn another $104 million this weekend from 4,020 locations in North America. That would be the third highest grossing second weekend in box office history, beating Marvel’s The Avengers‘ $103 million second weekend total and falling just behind Jurassic World‘s $106.6 million.
That number would be a 49 percent decline from Black Panther‘s $201 million opening weekend, which is a smaller decline than most Marvel Studios films see. On average, Marvel films decline by 53 percent between their first two weeks. There are some notable exceptions, such as The Avengers, which only dipped 45 percent.
For the past week, Black Panther has continually bested Marvel’s previous highest day total, which added up to the best first week ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. The film has earned $320 million domestically and $520 million worldwide.
Following this weekend’s gross, Black Panther will have already eclipsed the domestic lifetime total of any Marvel movie from the past year, including the $389 million earned by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The film has already surpassed the total of DC Films’ Justice League.
Another notable film this weekend is Annihilation, the sci-fi thriller from Ex Machina director Alex Garland. Annihilation will open in fourth place at the box office. The film is expected to earn $10 million in its first three days from 2,012 locations.
Keep reading to see the rest of the top 10 at the box office this weekend and how they compare to the box office dominance of Black Panther.
Black Panther is now in theaters. It will be followed by Avengers: Infinity War on May 4th, Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6th, Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, the fourth Avengers movie on May 3, 2019, the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 5, 2019, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2020.
