Today has been a busy one for the X-Men fandom today. Over the past months, speculation over who will play Cable in Deadpool 2 has hit an all-time high as fans plead for more casting details. Rumors have spread far and wide that talent such as Pierce Brosnan or Russel Crowe might nab the role. However, in a report from earlier today, fans learned that a Stranger Things star was a major contender for the role. And, at one point, it also looks like a very familiar Superman star looked into the role.

As reported by Collider, the site’s sources informed them that Michael Shannon was at one point in the mix to play Cable. The star is best-known to comic book fans thanks to his role as General Zod in Man of Steel. However, it looks like Shannon is no longer up for the role; Collider reports scheduling issues prevented the actor from pursuing Cable any further.

For some fans, Shannon is an odd name to see on the shortlist of Cable actors. Last year, the actor even commented on whether he would do a big Marvel or Star Wars flick. Speaking to Fandango, Shannon said he was not “really looking” for that kind of gig.
“No, I’m not really looking for that. They called me recently about some iteration โ I won’t say โ but some version of a movie that’s been made already countless times,” he revealed. “They were gonna give me a lot of of money, but I was like nah. Big movie, too. But I have to think it’s an interesting story. If I don’t, I can’t do it. I won’t do it.”
Of course, Deadpool 2 is overseen by 20th Century Fox rather than Marvel Studios, but the mouthy mercenary is a Marvel character. There’s no telling if the comment was a reference to Deadpool 2, but the timing of it does seem suspicious. As for whether you think the sequel will be “some version of a movie that’s been made already,” that will be for you to decide once more details about the film drop.
At the moment, it looks like Cable is being strung between a series of actors, but one surprising star is eyeing the role hard. David Harbour from Stranger Things has done screen tests with Ryan Reynolds for the role, and he has been described as “one of the actors under consideration for the role.”
