Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn had to fight for the right to include Adam Warlock’s cocoon in one of the movie’s post-credits scenes.

Gunn included the Warlock teaser in the very first draft of the movie’s script, but there was some understandable concern on Marvel’s part that the teaser may give fans false expectations about Warlock appearing in Avengers: Infinity War or its sequel.
“I had to fight for Adam in the post-credits sequence. Because I really thought that’s where that should go. And I thought one of the main reasons to have the Sovereign in the movie was to give audiences the hint that Adam Warlock is coming,” Gunn tells CinemaBlend. “That was one of the reasons for them to exist. And I wrote that post-credits sequence in the first draft of the script.
“And then there were a lot of questions about whether or not we should put that in there because people were going to expect Adam Warlock in Infinity War,” Gunn continued. “So one of the things I promised — which I do all of the time on Twitter — is letting everyone know that Adam Warlock is not going to be in Avengers 3 or Avengers 4. It’s just not going to happen. Because I didn’t want people to have false expectations of what they thought was going to happen with Adam.”
Warlock was a major player in Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet event from the 1990s and is a character most often associated with Avengers: Infinity War villain Thanos and the Infinity Stones (Infinity Gems in the comics) that Thanos is searching for. Warlock later led the Infinity Watch, a team devoted to preventing the Stones from being collected ever again.
Warlock was brought back during Marvel’s Annihilation: Conquest event, where he joined several of Marvel’s other cosmic heroes in stopping Ultron’s plan to rule the universe. He then became a founding member of Star-Lord’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
