The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Blu-ray though reveals what that original version looked like, adopting a slightly more regal look for the character (via CinemaBlend). The art features Ego standing outside of his starship gazing off into the distance, and his costume is much darker than the one that hit the screen.

The suit is made up of blues and darker browns, with a more stylized take on the cloak Kurt Russell wears in the film. The torso is a lighter blue, and he is also seen wearing some yellow tinted goggles. The wide brown straps, armor, and boots are all the same, but it appears some things were changed during the concept process.

What’s also interesting about this image is the filename, which happens to be J’son. In the comics, Star-Lord’s father is J’son of Spartax, a respected but at times ruthless ruler. Director James Gunn kept J’son’s overall feel with certain pieces of his origin to keep Star-Lord’s birth intact but made the character Ego the living planet instead. This allowed them to bring in things like Star-Lord’s powers, afforded him by his Ego lineage.

The filename could have been there in case the image leaked ahead of time, a nicely laid red herring. It could also mean that earlier on in the film’s planning the character was closer to his comic roots. Either way, it seems to have worked out for the best.
