In tonight’s new TV spot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a minute of fast-cut footage showed off a couple funny quips, the new villain Ayesha, and a look at the individual members of the team leading to the big money shot of them all together. But it seems like there may have been another major reveal in that footage that fans might’ve missed: Ego the living planet.
For those who don’t know, Ego is a giant, sentient floating head of a planet in the pages of Marvel Comics. In the movie, he’ll be played by Kurt Russell, and be Star-Lord (Chris Pratt)’s father. He’ll also be in human form in the film, as seen at San Diego Comic-Con. But he’ll almost certainly be seen as a planet, as well, and may be even in this video.
In the video, we see several scenes that feature the Guardians on a chaotic planet full of fire and lights. It’s where they are at the end of the footage when they’re all in the great team lineup shot, looking around as if they’re extremely confused or amazed. But take your eye off Mantis, Rocket and Groot, Drax, Yondu, Gamora, Star-Lord, and Nebula for a moment, and you’ll see behind the fire something that looks distinctly like sinew, the connective tissue of muscles. Indeed, the same can be seen behind Rocket and Groot earlier in the trailer, and behind Star-Lord, too. As for the fire, well… heart burn maybe? Or maybe he can just control his landscape. The other lights could be akin to neurons firing in the brain.
It would make sense for all of these shots to be coming from one planet – and it’s a planet without any discernible atmosphere. It would make sense, then, that this (all of them coming together) is happening later in the film, after Ego has been revealed. We’ll find out in May.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
