The of things I’m most looking forward to with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the addition of Kurt Russell (The Thing) and Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) to its cast. And for the two Hollywood legends, it’s a bit a reunion of sorts. They previously starred together in Tango & Cash — with Stallone portraying LAPD Lieutenant Raymond Tango and Russell portraying Downtown Los Angeles Lieutenant Gabriel Cash.

Though the the 1989 buddy cop thriller struggled to make a profit at the box office, its home release on VHS went very well and has become a bit of a cult classic with people that appreciate the exaggerated masculinity found in ’80s and ’90s action films.
So is there any chance Russell’s Ego The Living Planet (a.k.a. Star-Lord’s father) and Stallone’s Starhawk share a scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? “Well… no, there’s nothing there,” Russell told Total Film. “But what was fun was, when I learned that Sly was going to play a part, it was fun to just be ale to feel that we were in the same movie.”
That’s a shame. Was there at least an off-screen reunion? “I saw Sly two or three times during the making of the movie and after,” Russell shared. “It was great to be able to, once gain, hang with Sly. He’s a really huge person. His demeanor, everything about him. He always puts a smile on my face, and we share lots of laughs. I find him to be very smart and very funny – and alive… He’s a great hang. This was just fun, being in the same sandbox. It was nice to have that connection again.”
Even though the Russell and Stallone reunion won’t happen on the big-screen in this one, it doesn’t mean it won’t happen in the next. Director James Gunn promised that this wouldn’t be the last time fans get to see them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“This is definitely not a one-off,” Gunn told Fandango. “They’re both characters that we’ve taken a lot of time to develop, and they’re a big part of the MCU now.”
