At today’s retailer summit in Baltimore, Marvel Comics revealed that the title of their long-teased “MU” project, by writer Cullen Bunn and a murderer’s row of artists, will be titled Monsters Unleashed.

The project will presumably feature classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Werewolf, along with Marvel creatures like Man-Thing, who adorned the pages of the original Monsters Unleashed — a black and white horror magazine from the ’70s.

The series will feature art by Steve McNiven, Leinil Yu, Adam Kubert, Greg Land, and Salvador Larroca. There is no official word out of Baltimore as to who the monsters featured in the comic will be. Even if you take the non-trademarkable classic monsters out of the equation, there’s plenty of material to draw from. Marvel in the ’60s and ’70s was full of monsters, so much so that they were considered a safety net early on for Fantastic Four if the superhero element hadn’t worked out. Jack Kirby and other creators of that era created dozens of cool monsters, only a few of whom have ever really caught on with Marvel fandom.

Retailers are the only ones attending the summit, so there’s no official press reports coming out of there. A retailer reporting to Bleeding Cool broke the story, and has been doing so all day long.

Marvel has been releasing numerous teasers over the last week or so, each one featuring Bunn’s name and the name of one of the artists working on the project. More details will likely be announced at Baltimore Comic Con this weekend.

Monsters Unleashed is coming from Marvel in January 2017.
