Is Namor The Sub-Mariner Movie Coming Soon?

Rumors of a Namor the Sub-Mariner movie being in the works were reignited on Wednesday when Reel News Hawaii reported: “There’s buzz around the island that two rival productions could be swimming on our waters. ‘Aquaman’ & ‘Submariner.’” And today, adding credence to that rumor, the trade magazine Production Weekly listed ‘The Sub-Mariner’ as being among other currently-in-production projects.

The film rights to the Atlantean King — who first appeared publicly in Marvel Comics #1 (Oct. 1939) — were at Universal Pictures. The studio was actively developing a Namor film from 2001-2006 with directors Chris Columbus and Jonathan Mostow attached at separate times, but Universal never gave it a green-light.

However, according to a June 2016 interview Kevin Smith conducted with Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, the Namor film rights have reverted back to Marvel. “Yes, as far as I know yes we do [have them],” he shared. “Yeah, it’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony.”

In 2014, when Kevin Feige was asked about it, he said if anyone was going to make a Namor film it would be them — although he admitted that it was a little complicated. “Yes, but it’s slightly more complicated than that,” he explained. “Let’s put it this way – there are entanglements that make it less easy. There are older contracts that still involve other parties that mean we need to work things out before we move forward on it. As opposed to an Iron Man or any of the Avengers or any of the other Marvel characters where we could just put them in.”
