Rider has been presumed dead by most in the Marvel universe since the events of The Thanos Imperative. Rider and Star-Lord together sacrificed themselves to imprison Thanos in the Cancerverse. Questions arose when Star-Lord and Thanos both mysteriously reappear in the Marvel universe later on. The Original Sin event revealed that Rider had used his power to open a gateway for Star-Lord to return home. Unfortunately, Rider wasn’t able to hold Thanos back long enough to prevent him from following Star-Lord back into the Marvel universe.

After Rider’s disappearance, a younger Nova named Sam Alexander took over Marvel’s premiere space cop, making his first appearance in Marvel Point One in 2011. Alexander has since joined up with the latest incarnation of Rider’s old team, the New Warriors, and become a member of the Avengers. As of Marvel NOW! Alexander will split with the Avengers and join his fellow junior members, Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man, as members of the new Champions.

While Alexander has been well received by fans, anchoring his own solo Nova series since 2013, Rider remains a fan favorite. The Rider faithful have been clamoring for his return for years, and it looks like Marvel NOW! may finally deliver.

Marvel NOW! launches in Fall 2016.
