Spoilers incoming for The Mighty Thor #20, so if you haven’t read it yet you’ve been warned.
Mjolnir has been a hot potato over the last year, going from Odinson to Jane Foster and most recently to Captain America. The hammer from the ultimate universe on the other hand has been heavily sought after but no one has yet claimed it, until the final pages of The Mighty Thor #20.
As the issue closes, the hammer is picked up by the normally lovable Volstagg of Asgard, but these days he is anything but jolly (via ScreenRant).
Thanks to the chaos in the ten realms, mostly driven by Malekith and his army of dark elves, the light elves of the realm have been under constant attack. The invasion has caused many of the elves to seek out aid, and Volstagg readily jumps in to help.
Volstagg is doing his best to help the elves, carrying several elf children in his arms amidst the rubble from a Muspelheim attack. As he makes his way through a fire goblin appears right in front of Volstagg, screaming “All burn all burn all”, and incinerates all of the light elves Volstagg was trying to save.
Volstagg was spared thanks to being coated with fire goblin blood, but he didn’t leave unscathed. The moment elicits a mix of sorrow and rage that triggers the final breaking point for Volstagg, leading him to seek out the hammer. The narration reads “Behold the war Thor, and prepare to bleed”, signaling that this will not be the jolly Volstagg that fans have known in the past.
