Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.

Logan takes place in the year 2029, where mutant births have become extremely rare. The defenders of mutant kind, the X-Men, are long gone, and the only remains of them are an old and struggling Charles Xavier and a weary Logan. Logan’s vaunted healing factor has slowed, and at times doesn’t seem to work at all. When a young mutant needs his help, Logan has to unsheathe his claws once more. His job isn’t over yet.

Logan stars Hugh Jackman (Logan), Boyd Holbrook (Donald Pierce), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Dafne Keen (Laura Kinney/X-23), Doris Morgado (Maria), Stephen Merchant (Caliban), Elizabeth Rodriguez (Gabriela), and Richard E. Grant (Dr. Zander Rice). James Mangold is directing and helped on the screenplay along with Scott Frank and Michael Green.

Logan, played by Hughย Jackman, is up first.

We already knew it would beย Jackman’sย last outing as Wolverine, and both he and directorย Mangoldย left many hints that the film would be based in some way off of Markย Millarย and Steveย McNiven’sย Old Man Logan storyline.

Of course they can’t haveย Hawkeye, Venom-possessed dinosaurs, or the inbred children of Hulk and She-Hulk, but they did retain the vibe of the story. โ€จโ€จ

Logan’s healing factor is on theย fritzย when we get back to his story, and now he has to deal with something we’ve never seen him face in any X-Men film to date: family.

Laura

That family comes in the form of Laura, known to fans as X-23.

Played by Dafne Keen, the young child actor has looked brutal in her scenes in the trailer.

Whether Laura is actually Logan’s child or a clone has not been revealed, but she is shown to have a connection to Logan. โ€จโ€จ

Whether Logan leaves the character on the table for her to take on the mantle of the Wolverine, like her comic counterpart, remains to be seen, but fan reaction to her appearance in the trailer has been positive.

Charles Xavier

Patrick Stewart returns to the Wolverine franchise in a much more substantial role.

After a cameo in the first film and appearing in a post-credits scene in the second, he’s given co-star status for this final movie.

Charles Xavier seems to be Logan’s moral compass in the scenes shown in the trailer thus far, encouraging Logan to help the young girl that has crashed into their lives.โ€จโ€จ

He also appears to be hiding in Wolverine’s makeshift home, within an overturned water tower. Logan seems to be protecting him in the beginning of the film, but that can’t work out for too long.

Dr. Zander Rice

Dr. Zander Rice, played by Richard E. Grant, is a scientist in the Weapon X program in the comic books.

But based on the post-credits scene at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, he might be working for a different company.โ€จโ€จ

While it remains to be seen how much this film is beholden to that stinger, it seemed to hint at the involvement of one Mister Sinister, being that someone obtained Logan’s DNA sample and placed it in a briefcase labeled ‘Essex.’

Is Rice just Mister Sinister in disguise? Doubtful, as Mangold previously stated he had no intention to use the character. But that could simply be a red herring.

Donald Pierce

Donald Pierce will be played by Boyd Holbrook in this film.

In the comics Pierce is the leader of the Reavers, a group of extremists who alter their bodies with technology. Pierce is one of those characters who dies and comes back quite often.

Given the R rating and the fact that both Logan and Laura appear to kill a lot of dudes in the trailers, we don’t expect Pierce to be a threat long for this world.
