Patrick Stewart Feared Logan Would Typecast Him

So far, 2017 has been an excellent year for superhero films, and Logan was the first feature to start the trend. The much-awaited X-Men movie rolled out earlier this spring, and it saw Patrick Stewart roll into his final outing as Professor Xavier. Now, the British actor is reflecting on his initial doubts about the film, and Stewart confesses he feared his work on Logan might typecast him.

Stewart’s surprising comments comes from a new interview he did with the Mirror UK. The actor told the site he thought Logan might typecast him as he moves onto other projects because of his age. Stewart admitted he’s not fond of addressing mortality these days, but the 76-year-old actor did say he wasn’t ready to give up on acting. It’s just that Stewart doesn’t want to be known as a geriatric star.

“There might have been moments before Logan when I thought, ‘If I do this and I really go for it, am I only going to get cast as geriatrics from now on?’ I am not quite there yet,” the actor explained.

According to Steward, his fears about having a memory-addled role slowly disappeared as Logan filmed.

“Will people say, ‘Oh, no, we can’t have him playing a healthy, fit individual. He is just too weak and frail and old.’ But screw it! It was so much fun…. And I enjoyed every aspect of it, particularly given that I was going to be sharing almost all of my time with Hugh [Jackman].”

As fans know, Logan bowed out the X-Men leader with heart-wrenching honesty. Professor Xavier suffered greatly following the loss of his mutant family, and his dementia made him a threat to all of mankind; Just one cognitive slip was enough to bring most men to their knees, and the telepath stumbled often. Logan wrapped with shortly after Xavier’s tragic murder, but fans were given time to part ways with the iconic superhero in the same way Wolverine himself said goodbye. So please, Hollywood, don’t take your usual frustrations out upon Stewart. The man was just doing one hell of a job.

Logan is out now on Digital HD and will release on Blu-ray on July 10.
