When it comes to comic adaptations, the Marvel Cinematic Universe may reign supreme, but 20th Century Fox shouldn’t be discounted. The studio is hard at work on a X-Men franchise reboot that touts heroes like Jean Grey and Magneto. And, now, Deadpool’s creator is asking fans to give Fox credit for its comic book plans.

Rob Liefeld spoke with ComicBook earlier today to discuss Deadpool 2‘s first-look photos at Cable, and it was there the artist gushed about Fox. Referencing to the studio’s mixed reputation with fans, Liefeld asked comic enthusiasts to give the company credit where its due.
“Between Deadpool and Logan, Fox deserves to have more [credit],” Liefeld said. “You could say, ‘But Rob, they have so much [credit].’ They deserve more. And I think they keep proving it.
“Deadpool looked like he jumped out of the comics, and was such a wonderful representation of everything I love about him. And then you saw Logan, which was the Wolverine everybody had been clamoring for. And again, these two movies with R ratings did giant box office, better than most PG-13 movies this year.”
Fans have been vocal about their issues with Fox’s reboot X-Men films, but Deadpool and Logan managed to buck the trend. The R-rated films broke box records thanks to their uncompromising grit, and critics praised Deadpool in particular for its unflinching comedy. Fox did hold out on bringing Deadpool to the big-screen for awhile following his botched debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but actor Ryan Reynolds proved the mouthy mercenary can bring in laughs and loot.
And, when the film’s sequel drops next year, Liefeld promises Cable’s debut will be one of the best ever done by Fox.
“The minute you see Josh’s Cable — he is grizzled, he is weathered, he looks badass,” Liefeld explained. “He has tons of gear. People have told me online how thrilled they are that he has pouches.”
This isn’t the first time Liefeld has gushed over Josh Brolin’s casting as Cable. The creator spoke with ComicBook shortly after the news broke, and Liefeld said the award-winning actor proved he could hold his own against Reynold’s starring bit.
“He’s such a great actor, that’s where it starts. Who else, really, is gonna hold their ground with Ryan [Reynolds]?” the creator said of Brolin’s counterpart. “I mean, that is…energy unbridled. When I see the two of them together, I think it’s going to be the comic book equivalent of Rush Hour. I don’t know if comic fans are ready for it.”
