Tony Stark isn’t necessarily used to serving as a mentor, which makes his relationship with Spider-Man so interesting. To hear him explain it, it seems his new role is also especially stressful.

During the press tour for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. sat down with ABC to talk about his new role, how he’s adjusting to it, and what inspires his take on the unique bond with Peter (via Cinema Blend).
“I just keep thinking it’s about when your 16-year-old says, ‘Well I have a license now I can drive,’ and you want to put a tracker in their car and you want to be able to deactivate it” Downey Jr. explained.
Not everyone has to worry that their son will swing around the city fighting crime, but then again not everyone has Tony Stark as a pseudo father figure.
The mentor-like relationship Stark has with Peter was always part of the mix, even early on according to Homecoming director Tom Watts.
“He was always a part of it,” Watts told Den of Geek. “That was always a big part, the idea of him being this reluctant mentor โ or the unintentional mentor โ to Peter. Like, just sort of the grand ambition to be like that someday.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming currently has a 4.14 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings.
