With a new trailer being released earlier this morning, the Internet is buzzing for anticipation for Spider-Man: Homecoming. But given the iconic nature of the Spider-Man franchise – and the fact that this is the third big-screen reboot of the character in less than twenty years – many are wondering just how Homecoming will set itself apart from its predecessors.

According to the film’s star, Tom Holland, one significant aspect of his version of Peter Parker will be unique from those of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. And it has to do, surprisingly, with the larger world that Homecoming is set in.
While both Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man series were set in their own separate universes, Homecoming has the advantage of being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to Holland, this gives the film a chance to authentically represent the younger side of Peter’s character, as opposed to having the character essentially carry a larger universe.
“We definitely focus on a younger superhero. From the vast amount of superhero movies that we’ve seen, we’ve seen the soldier, the scientist, the billionaire, and now it’s time to see the kid. There’s something interesting in giving a 15-year-old incredible powers and seeing what he would do with it.”
Holland has certainly does his research to be able to capture that element of the film. He reportedly went undercover at an actual New York high school in preparation for the role. According to Holland, this allows the film to relate to its younger audience, and bring a sense of lightness to a character that has previously been interpreted rather darkly.
“I strongly believe a 15-year-old would have the time of his life. It was important that we see Peter Parker enjoying his powers, but also using them to do good.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters July 7, 2017.
