Apparently, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is feeling the pain of The Batman director Matt Reeves, after the recent controversy over an interview where Reeves seemed to suggest that The Batman wasn’t connected to the larger DC Extended Universe.

Reeves has come out and stated that there his original quote was misconstrued, and that The Batman is definitely connected to the DCEU. When he did that, Gunn shared the following sympathetic anecdote:
I understood it, @mattreevesLA! Had the same misunderstanding many times… https://t.co/FTtMHXjvCa

What Gunn refers to in his tweet is a previous case where one his own statements to the press resulted in a big misunderstanding.ย
In the past, Gunnย has addressed how hisย Guardians of the Galaxyย films are unconnected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universeย storylineย – a quote that quickly twisted around to suggest that the director sawย Guardiansย as an independent entity, existing outside of the MCU.ย
Reeves fell into a similar valley of controversy when he said that when he was approached about The Batman, it was as a “standalone. This isn’t part of the Extended Universe.” The resulting flood ofย ‘The Batman Isn’t Part of the DCEU‘ย articles prompted the director to clarify that his Batman film will indeed be included in the main DC Films continuity.ย
While it’s surely annoying as a director to have your every public statement scrutinized and dissected, it is, inevitably, part of the job of helming a major superhero blockbuster film. When making statements to press, exacting wording is key, because like a president, what a director says about a film is taken to be gospel. What’s especially ironic about all this is that James Gunnย is one of the most prevalentย directors when it comes to speaking to press and fans on Facebook chats, etc., often talking in ‘off the cuff’ fashion about big headline-making subjects – only to then complain when those statements get reported.ย
The Batmanย is supposedly going into production sooner before later, but Ben Afflecks’sย Batman can next be seen inย Justice League, which hits theaters on November 17th. Check out ourย Fullย Justice Leagueย Database Page, below!
