The Gifted Casts Elena Satine as Dreamer

Fox’s upcoming series The Gifted is set to take the X-Men lore fans know and love in a whole new direction. And as was revealed during the network’s Television Critics Association panel, that will include a new member of the show’s mutant team.

Elena Satine (Twin Peaks, Revenge) has been cast as Dreamer, a mutant with the power to add or take away people’s memories, in the upcoming series. Showrunner Matt Nix revealed that the character will enter the fold in the show’s second episode, in what will be her live-action debut. According to Nix, Dreamer brings a unique set of powers into the fold of The Gifted.

“One of the things about her character,” Nix explained, “is that’s a really sexy power that isn’t a gigantic power. We aren’t blowing up a building with her … it doesn’t involve a six-week CG build.”

For the uninitiated, Dreamer is a mysterious element of the X-Men lore. In the comics, she has the same memory-altering abilities, which are brought on by her magical ‘dream smoke.’ She served as a member of the mutant underground group the Morlocks, even serving under the villainous Masque at one point and time. Her name and background are primarily unknown, leaving many to call her Beautiful Dreamer.

It’s unclear what of Dreamer’s backstory will make its way to The Gifted – but one new element reportedly will. Nix revealed that Dreamer will be a part of a love triangle between Thunderbird (Blair Redford) and another character in the series.

This isn’t the first time Satine has appeared in a comic book-inspired series. The actress previously appeared as Asgardian villain Lorelei on two episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and portrayed DC Comics fan-favorite Mera on Smallville.

The Gifted tells the emotional story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family seeks help from an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

The Gifted premieres on Oct. 2 on Fox, with a pilot episode directed by veteran X-Men movies director Bryan Singer.
