FOX’s foray into the X-Men universe on television didn’t waste time to put the Strucker family through the ringer, as the first episode of The Gifted ended on a cliffhanger that few saw coming.

Reed Strucker spent his days incarcerating mutants for Sentinel Services, but when he found out his children were mutants it didn’t take long for him to take his family on the run. And though his wife and kids might be safe for now, Reed was shot and left behind, captured by the same group he used to work for.

The Gifted creator and showrunner Matt Nix and star Stephen Moyer spoke with TV Line about what’s going to happen in the next episode with the family split.

Coming out of last night’s angsty cliffhanger, Episode 2 is “super-continuous, and super-intense,” Nix tells us. “If you liked the pace an scale of the pilot, we do not let up in the second episode.” While the heroes who did escape the Sentinels deal with detours (“We’ve seen Blink’s portals working great, but what if they don’t? Really interesting things happen,” Nix teases), Reed endeavors to reunite with his family โ€” though, Moyer says, “there are going to be many things along the way that stop him from being able to do that in the way that he had hoped.”

It sounds like the family won’t have a happy reunion for quite some time, and both sides will have their own troubles in trying to stay a step ahead of Sentinel Services. The first episode revealed that Polaris is pregnant with Eclipse’s child. Now that Reed and Polaris are behind bars together, the two will work together to escape imprisonment and reunite with their loved ones.

But how will they escape? And how will the Strucker family deal with Reed’s absence?

Don’t expect things to let up when The Gifted‘s second episode premieres on FOX on Monday, October 9.
