However, with Avengers: Infinity War on the horizon (and some major character deaths expected to occur in those films), fans are beginning to wonder about just how long their favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes (and the actors playing them) can last.
Even though Thor 3‘s title, “Ragnarok” hints at an Apocalyptic event, it’s already confirmed that Thor, Hulk and Loki will survive – since all three appear in Infinity War. However, while at SDCC17, Thor actor Chris Hemsworth indicated that he may already know when his version of The Thunder God may come to an end.
End of Odinson
Speaking with MTV, Hemsworthย said “kinda,” when asked if he knows the where the finish line is for his version of Thor; of course, he quickly followed that up by saying “Who knows: if you buy enough tickets for this film, maybe I’ll make another one for ya.”ย
This brings us right back to the default operating procedure for these superhero movie franchise, these days: you can plan a limited run for an actor, but if that actor is still generating a lot of box office revenue with his/her character, then the dump truck full of money gets rolled out, and the actor and franchise will continue.ย
No one in the Marvel Cinematic Universe can speak to that better than Hemsworth’sย Thorย co-star, Tom Hilddleston. Loki was supposed to be a one-off villain for the firstย Thorย movie – and by now, Hiddlestonย will have appeared in all threeย Thorย movies and two out of threeย Avengersย movies. So, like in Marvel Comics, no one really has to die (i.e., stayย offscreen) forever.ย
For Thor, there are many pathways to the character continuing without Hemsworth: alien Beta Ray Bill or the current female version of Thor being two fan-favorites.ย
