Some fans were sad to see Natalie Portman leave the Thor franchise, but what does that mean for Thor and Jane, and how does his fascination with Valkyrie fit in?

The good news for fans is that it won’t just be pushed to the side and ignored. During ComicBook.com’s visit to the Thor: Ragnarok set, the plans for addressing that became a bit clearer. Suffice to say, Thor just didn’t forget about Jane.
“Umm, no we have this, we have someโฆ some very respectable fun with how that relationship may have come to an end,” said Thor actor Chris Hemsworth.
Fans will also see Thor’s infatuation with Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who stands in total contrast to Jane in almost every way.
“It’s like Thor’s meeting his hero! And he’s absolutely smitten by her and because of her history, and being a Valkyrie and all of that,” Hemsworth said about his new ally. “But she’s also this beautiful woman so he’s kind of caught off guard. And she can, you know, she could beat the s*** out of him if she wanted. So I think he hasn’t come up against that very often.”
That decision was intentional and gives Thor a different personality to play off of. “It certainly wasn’t the case with Jane,” said Hemsworth. “There was a whole different affection and love there. So that was another, you know, ‘How can we make that different from the previous one?’”
Part of the change is also due to the fact that Portman decided not to return for another go-round in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She is referenced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it seems that might not happen much after Thor: Ragnarok. Whether he ends up in some sort of relationship with Valkyrie or not, the Jane years are a thing of the past at least for the foreseeable future.
Ragnarok in many ways is a fresh start for the franchise as opposed to a third film in a trilogy.
“The other films are there, and it’s great to watch them,” director Taika Waititi told ComicBook.com. “I think they’re good films, but I don’t mind if people start with this film. For me, this is my Thor 1.”
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3rd.
