Thor: Ragnarok is full of some great comedy along with its epic Marvel action, and director Taika Waititi infuses that comedy with some clever little Easter egg references.
One joke that a lot of viewers may not have picked up on, was a particular location that’s actually a clever Easter egg reference to the animated TV series, South Park. Read below for the details!
Early on in Thor Ragnarok, Thor discovers that Loki is imitating Odin and usurping the throne of Asgard. Upon uncovering the deception, Thor strong-arms Loki into transporting to Earth, in order to find the real Odin. Upon arriving in NYC, Loki leads Thor to where he stashed Odin: Shady Acres retirement home.
If you don’t recall the name, Shady Acres is the retirement community where Stan Marsh’s family stashed Stan’s grandpa. It’s a nice little wink from Taika Waititi to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the makers of South Park. Since the South Park makers actually got the name of the retirement home from the place where Jim Carrey goes undercover in Ace Ventura, you can actually consider this one a double Easter egg!
Hilariously enough, in the film, Shady Acres has been demolished when Thor and Loki happen upon it, forcing them to get help from a brand-new ally in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
