One fan brought up a good point, something that had some fans scratching their heads. While Peter was under his spell, Ego explained his master plan/purpose, which he calls “The Expansion.” Over thousands of years, on thousands of worlds, Ego planted extensions of himself so that he could roam and spread, covering all that exists. However, because this endeavor can’t be powered by one Celestial, Ego needed a second, so he got the idea to impregnate other species, hoping at least one of the couplings would produce another Celestial being — like Peter.
During that scene, we see animated statues of Ego’s human avatar making out with other aliens that he knocked up. So the fan asked: “Why did Ego look human in the interactions he had with the other species he was to impregnate? I mean, wouldn’t he take the shape of the species in question?
“Yes! And I believe he did,” Gunn replied. “This is getting pretty in-depth. I believe that when Ego is showing Peter those statues, those statues are created for Peter so that he wasn’t… For instance, when Ego made love to a turtle creature — which we see in the background and sort of smooching with a turtle creature — he was probably in the shape of a turtle creature when he went to that planet. But for the sake of storytelling — for both our storytelling with the audience and Ego’s storytelling with Peter — we made him look human in those situations.”
