In a recent vist to the Doctor Strange set, ComicBook spoke with Benedict Wong, who plays the role of Wong (a Monk) in the upcoming Marvel movie.
We already know that his character will be a bit different than the manservant that we know from the comic books, but how exactly?
We asked Wong, "Who is this version of Wong since the one that we know is no longer in play? Who is this character now, where do we first meet him, what is the story?"
"Wong is now a master at Kamar-Taj training the fellow disciples and sorcerers, and the protector of the sanctum relics, and these ancient ritual books. It's where we'll see how Wong and Doctor Strange come together and become really allies to fight against these dimensional forces."
He further explained that when his character meets the damaged neurosurgeon Stephen Strange he is a total rookie with no knowledge of his powers. Wong is responsible for mentoring him and teaching him things like spells, and otherworldly concepts but they stay within the inner sanctum.
In fact, we'll be seeing training sessions between a very serious master and his rookie apprentice. When we asked Wong about his characters personality, he responded with:
"He's very serious about what he needs to do because it's almost like a huge door that just these extra dimensional forces are bearing through and there was a fight that no one is really seeing really, so I think there's a real importance in terms of his training..."
Because we've never known a master Monk to be a comedian, this sounds about right. Wong has the task of teaching Doctor Strange everything about the inner sanctum - a very serious undertaking if he is to make it out alive.
Doctor Strange releases on November 4, 2016.
