In a new featurette for the Fox series, The Gifted‘s creator, director, and star explain the themes they plan to explore.
“This show is all about how a country relates to people who are different and how people who are different relate to their own country and their own world,” creator and executive producer Matt Nix says in the video.
“This is a story about mutants that live on the outskirts and family on the run,” says Bryan Singer, the veteran X-Men movie director who helmed the pilot episode of The Gifted.
“We’re playing with a world where anybody who isn’t normal or ordinary is view as dangerous to society,” says star Stephen Moyer, who plays Reed Strucker, a district attorney who discovers his children are both mutants.
While the series will include mutant superheroes from the Marvel Comics universe like Thunderbird, Polaris, and Blink, Singer goes on to explain how The Gifted inhabits a corner of the X-Men universe that fans haven’t been exposed to by the X-Men movies.
“We have the ability to touch upon other aspects of the X-Men universe but it’s not superheroes saving the world. It’s people that are disenfranchised,” he says. “There’s much more going on beneath the surface, both in the human world and in the mutant world.”
Action-adventure family drama THE GIFTED, from Marvel, tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.
Written by Matt Nix (APB, “Burn Notice”), directed by Bryan Singer (the “X-Men” franchise”) and executive-produced by Nix, Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Wolverine”), Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past”), Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Daredevil,” “Marvel’s Jessica Jones”) and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s Daredevil,” “Marvel’s Jessica Jones”), the series stars Stephen Moyer (SHOTS FIRED, “True Blood”) and Amy Acker (“Person of Interest”).
The Gifted premieres on Oct. 2 on Fox with a pilot episode directed by veteran X-Men movies director Bryan Singer.
