How Yondu Plays A Role In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

Despite suffering many tragedies, the space-faring Terran known as Peter Quill manages to guard the galaxy with a skip in his step and a chip on his shoulder. And that’s thanks to no small part from his mother and the two mixtapes she made for her son prior to passing.

But the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy known as Star-Lord lost another parent in the latest movie in the form of his surrogate father Yondu. But like mom, the Ravager also left a musical gift for his son in the form of an outdated MP3 player known as a Zune.

Music will continue to play a large role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Much like how Quill was affected by his mother Meredith Quill’s death in the first two movies, Yondu’s sacrifice and his gift from the end of Vol. 2 will loom large in the next installment.

“[Guardians of the Galaxy] Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 have been Meredith’s song choices, her communication to Peter,” director James Gunn said in a Facebook Live Q&A session. “In Vol. 3, the song choices will be Yondu’s communicating to Peter.”

Music has played a significant role in both the Guardians movies and in Peter’s life. They’ve helped keep Peter grounded as he’s gone on countless adventures throughout the Marvel Universe. Now that he lost the person that raised him to become a man, he’ll likely lean on the one constant he’s had his entire life.

But it’ll be interesting to learn what’s on that Zune in the upcoming movie. The MP3 player wasn’t created until the 2000s, and though it’s not limited by the eras that came before. It’ll be interesting to see what Yondu’s song choice includes considering his musical tastes were likely shaped by Peter’s.
