17 Years Later, Star Wars Is About to Redeem Its Most Controversial Character (No, Not Jar Jar Binks)

Star Wars has never been scared to veer into strange territory. In the original trilogy, the Ewoks, cuddly creatures that don’t use advanced technology, help take down the Empire with a few wooden traps and a can-do attitude. The Gungans pull off a similar feat in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, standing up against the might of the Separatist droid army with little more than glowing orbs. The species that calls Naboo home doesn’t get nearly as much flak as the one from Endor, though, and that’s because there’s one character that hogs the spotlight: Jar Jar Binks. After crossing paths with Ob-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, Jar Jar finds himself in the middle of the galaxy’s most important conflict and can’t do anything right.

Making childish noises and falling all over himself is bad enough, but Jar Jar takes things a step further by actually being responsible for Emperor Palpatine gaining most of his power when he recommends to the other senators that they grant their boss emergency powers. However, as bad as that is, the Gungan still isn’t Star Wars’ most controversial character. No, that title belongs to another annoying alien, who is about to get a second chance at the big time.

The Star Wars: The Clone Wars Movie Is a Rough Watch Because of One Character

To announce its return to animation, Lucasfilm released the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie in 2008. The film served as an introduction to the new animated series that would replace Genndy Tartakovsky’s original one, and things were very different from the start. For starters, Anakin Skywalker meets his apprentice Ahsoka Tano, for whom there is no mention of prior. She proves to be just as reckless as her master, not wanting to listen to instructions and opting to do things her own way. Anakin doesn’t have long to adjust to his new role before a dangerous mission comes across his desk, one that involves helping out a gangster who calls his former planet home.

Count Dooku kidnaps Jabba the Hutt’s son, Rotta, and it’s up to the Jedi to get him back. After retrieving the little creature, it doesn’t take long for him to start causing problems, with him farting constantly and earning the nickname “Stinky.” That kind of humor isn’t abnormal for a movie aimed at children, but Rotta doesn’t know when to let up, and he never gets a moment where he makes up for all of his mistakes, like when Jar Jar bumbles his way into knocking over a good chunk of the droid army. Fortunately, Star Wars is gearing up to give Rotta a second chance, and it doesn’t seem like he’s going to screw it up.

Rotta the Hutt Is Back in a Big Way

To announce its return to the big screen, Lucasfilm is releasing Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, a continuation of the titular duo’s story that started on Disney+. Story details about the movie are few and far between, but Din Djarin looks to be picking another fight with the remnants of the Empire. Of course, with the New Republic around, the Imperials have to operate in the shadows, which means setting up shop in some seedy locations. As part of his latest mission, Din will travel to a planet that enjoys gladiator fights and run into a familiar face, Rotta. It’s been a long time since the Hutt ran around with Anakin and Ahsoka, and the years have seemingly been kind to him, as he has grown into a hulking creature.

What kind of role Rotta will play in The Mandalorian & Grogu remains a mystery, but it’s sure to be impactful, as the powers that be wouldn’t just bring him back on a whim. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Emmy winner Jeremy Allen White will voice the alien, ensuring that he’s got at least a few lines. While Rotta getting a redemption arc probably wasn’t on many people’s bingo cards after The Clone Wars movie, it’s happening, which could be good news for other controversial figures in a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
