The Beatles fans have another way to enjoy the legendary rock band’s music. The quartet of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr shot to stardom in the ‘60s with a unique blend of American rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and pop that established them as one of the most influential bands in music history. The Beatles charted their first single, “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” in 1964, and went on to score hit after hit with songs such as “Yellow Submarine,” “Hey Jude,” and “Come Together,” released across a dozen studio albums, including Abbey Road, Let It Be, and Revolver. In 2007, their songs set the framework for a movie that is now streaming for free.

Julie Taymor’s 2007 jukebox musical romantic drama Across the Universe started streaming on Tubi, Fox’s free streaming service, beginning August 1, 2025. In part based on the song of the same name by Lennon–McCartney, the film stars Jim Sturgess as Jude and Evan Rachel Wood as Lucy, star-crossed lovers who meet and fall in love amid the social and political upheaval of the 1960s that accompanies the Vietnam War. The Beatles’ songs, including “With a Little Help From My Friends,” “All My Loving,” and “Dear Prudence,” serve as a sonic framework for the narrative. Joe Anderson, T. V. Carpio, Dana Fuchs, and Martin Luther McCoy also star, with Bono, Eddie Izzard, Joe Cocker, and Salma Hayek making cameos.
Why You Should Watch Across the Universe
Across the Universe was released in theaters in October 2007 following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival the previous month. The film was far from a commercial success and only managed to gross about $29 million globally (including $24 million at the domestic box office) against a reported budget of approximately $45 million to $70 million, making it a box office bomb. It didn’t fare much better with critics, who only gave it a 53% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie wasn’t a commercial or critical success, but it is well worth a watch for any fan of The Beatles, and the audience has given the movie an 82% approval rating. Across the Universe uses The Beatles’ music to drive the narrative, illustrate the tumultuous 1960s, and explore many of the same themes the band explored in their music, including love, an anti-war sentiment, and self-discovery. The result is a visually stunning musical drama that captures the spirit of the ‘60s. The soundtrack isn’t the only thing the movie has going for it, though. Across the Universe features strong performances from the entire cast and a truly original and is an ambitious cinematic endeavor.
