Is The New DC Studios Batman Reboot Based on Grant Morrison Comics?

Is the new DC Universe franchise version of live-action Batman going to be based on the comic books of Grant Morrison? Whether he meant to or not, DC Studios head James Gunn has managed to get fans speculating in that direction after the latest photo he posted to Twitter. Gunn's photo showed off an impressive charcuterie spread being served in what is presumably his home, with a hungry-looking feline poking its head over the table to see what the good eats were about. However, when DC fans put the background of the photo under a microscope, they found a Batman tease that was hard to miss:

As you can see in the blown-up photo, James Gunn is keeping the three-volume Batman Omnibus by Grant Morrison real close these days, in proud display on what looks like it could be a reading-area coffee table. As always, it's hard to measure exactly where the line between coincidence and Eater egg teaser lies, as James Gunn is a master of social media PR. That particular selection of Batman stories does seem like more than a coincidence, though, given how Morrison altered the Batman world, starting in the mid-2000s.

The three-volume Batman omnibus seen in Gunn's photo contains these major milestone stories (to name a few):

  • Batman & Son – The Story that brought back Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul's son Damian Wayne, and (eventually) made him the new Robin under Batman's tutelage. Ra's al Ghul, Talia, and the League of Assassins are all major pieces of DC lore that were re-fitted under Batman and have grown far more significant with time. Damian and Bruce's role as a father would indeed be major new ground for DC a live-action DC franchise to explore.
  • Batman R.I.P.  –  This story saw an obscure villain (Doctor Hurt) and his organization (Black Glove) team with Joker and enact a plan to dismantle Bruce Wayne/Batman's life and shatter his sanity. After triggering a psychological switch in Bruce's head, they leave him amnesiac, and homeless, forcing him to go on an "Odyssey" through Gotham's streets. When the inequity and ugliness of Gotham push him too far, Bruce snaps, and a new persona "The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh" takes hold, unleashing a far more violent version of Batman on Gotham. Eventually, Bruce gets it together and gets some allies to take back Gotham. A quintessential story about Batman's psyche and a deep look at his world.
  • Battle for the Cowl/Batman & Robin – When Batman was supposedly killed by Darkseid in the Final Crisis event, a group of successors competed to replace Bruce Wayne, with Dick Grayson winning the challenge. Dick and Damien Wayne became the new Batman and Robin for that time. If
  • The Return of Bruce Wayne – It turned out Bruce wasn't dead and instead had to travel the entire history of the DC Universe and get back to the present, after being displaced in time. He eventually "earns" his way back to the Batman mantle.
  • Batman Inc. – Bruce Wayne makes himself the public sponsor of Batman, allowing him to use his fortune to set up Batman and Bat-Family allies as a worldwide detective and crime-fighting organization, giving rise to many new Batman-themed characters in DC lore.

Which of these stories would you like to see in the new DC Studios Universe? Is Grant Morrison a good creator to draw from?
