We already know that Godzilla 2 will be bringing iconic Godzilla monsters like Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah into this modern franchise – but what about the King of Monsters himself?
The 2014 Godzilla director Gareth Edwards went with is still affectionately referred to as “Fat Godzilla,” with some hardcore fans (particularly in Japan) accusing the Hollywood version of straying to far from the characters Toho origins. Today we have an image shared by Godzilla 2 director Mike Dougherty, which teases the design concept for Godzilla, in this sequel film:

Obviously this a very early rendering of what Godzilla will look like; however, from this angle, it looks like the big guy has gotten even more tank-like, if stocky build and visible lack of neck are to be believed. But then again, since this is such an early design, it’s probably smart to withhold judgement until we see more.
Godzilla 2 (tentatively titled Godzilla: King of Monsters) will chronicle the next phase of the movie monster icon’s rebooted franchise, which revolves around the idea of more Kaiju beasts invading our world, in the wak of Godzilla’s battle with the MUTOS in the 2014 film.
The sequel will bring a new human cast, which includes Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Bradley Whitford (West Wing), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), and Ziyi Zhang (Mulan). Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins will be returning as Monarch scientists Dr. Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham (respectively).
Godzilla: King of Monsters will be in theaters on March 22, 2019.
