Disney’s live-action train continues to move along with the anticipated Mulan, and the Disney classic will start filming sooner than you think.

According to a new listing on My Entertainment World, the live-action Mulan will start shooting in January 2018. As for where the film will hit several locations located in China, New Zealand, and Australia, ensuring the film’s surroundings will be eye catching, to say the least.

The live-action version will be directed by Niki Caro, who threw a number of fans for a loop when word came out that music would not be included. She would later clear that up.

“No, not at all. I mean, I haven’t even started on the movie yet” said Caro. “I haven’t seen a single casting yet, and these are conversations that are all ongoing. The live-action is based on that inspirational Chinese ballad and on the animated Disney classic. We’re still exploring the role that music’s going to play in it, but for sure there will be music.”

Disney’s Mulan features several memorable music numbers, including Reflection and I’ll Make a Man Out of You. While each live-action interpretation will be different, the music is such a big part of Disney’s appeal, it would seem odd to not include it in some way.

It didn’t seem to hurt Beauty and the Beast, which brought in over $504 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide.

Speaking of Disney’s other live-action projects, the studio recently got mixed reactions with their casting of Aladdin, but it is important to Caro for the lead to be of Asian descent.

“Of course, of course. In all my work that is centered in cultures not my own, I hope that comes through, because that is incredibly important to me. When I made Whale Rider, I saw that to be specific and authentic is to be universal, and I’ve continued to work in an identical way ever since. As the projects get bigger, the more certain I am that cultural authenticity and specificity is the only way to approach my work.”

Mulan is currently slated to him sometime in 2019, but casting should start happening before the end of the year if it is going to start filming in January.
