Matt Damon gave an extensive interview to the NY Daily News this week, supporting The Martian. He talked about thinking “deflategate” was overblown, and how Ridley Scott pulled him out of an 18 month vacation from acting. But when it comes to superheroes, Damon feels like his one desire or opportunity already passed him by.

“For us it was always Daredevil,” Damon said. He and lifelong friend Ben Affleck both had conversations about doing the movie in 2003. “That’s the comic we read when we were kids, but when that one came along I chickened out, because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director (Mark Steven Johnson’s) work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it.’”

He also posited that, in the end, he doesn’t “think Ben was ultimately very proud of it.”

So what could still get Damon into tights? “If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, ‘I want to do Daredevil,’ I would be in.”

Ultimately, he’d rather move into directing a superhero movie than starring in one, he told the Daily News.

The closest he’s likely to come to a superhero role, then, is returning to Jason Bourne. In the new film, “It’s 12 years since Jason Bourne has been on the grid,” and with his memories back, they’ll be answering the questions of where he’s been and what he’s been doing.
