Marvel introduced a new formidable superhero in Thunderbolts* whose darker half easily took down the titular team, but there’s one hero not yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans think could take on the god-like Sentry. Lewis Pullman debuted as Robert Reynolds, aka The Sentry, in Thunderbolts*, and also played the hero’s dark alter ego, the Void, who posed a significant threat to the citizens of New York. Sentry bested Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Alexei Shostakov, John Walker, and Ava Starr โ the MCU’s New Avengers โ without breaking a sweat, but one Marvel hero could be more capable.

A recent question posed on Reddit pondered who’d win in a battle between the Sentry and David Haller from FX’s Legion series. While agreeing that this fight would be visually spectacular, Marvel fans overwhelmingly concur that Legion has the power to defeat Sentry in battle. However, whether this fight happens in the MCU or not is another question, as there is currently no sign of David Haller being introduced, and no sign of Noah Hawley’s FX series โ set adjacent to 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise โ being integrated into the franchise.
Why We Want to See Sentry & Legion’s Battle in the MCU

Dan Stevens portrayed David Haller, the mutant son of Professor X, Charles Xavier, throughout Legion’s three seasons, which ran between 2017 and 2019. Stevens’ portrayal of the mentally troubled Omega-level reality-warping mutant was celebrated, with Legion becoming one of the highest-rated and most popular X-Men franchise projects. The series also showed off some of Haller’s remarkable power, though it dulled him down for live-action, limiting him to a selection of psychic abilities, including telepathy, telekinesis, and teleportation. On the page, however, he is one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful and unpredictable mutants.
This is clearly reminiscent of Sentry, who also harbors a god-like level of power and struggles with intense mental health problems. While Sentry’s depression, trauma, and isolation manifest as the Void, who intends to thrust everyone else into visions of their most traumatic experiences, Haller has dissociative identity disorder in Marvel Comics and schizophrenia in the live-action Legion series. The scale of their internal struggles combined with the magnitude of their powers establishes them both as unpredictable threats as well as heroes, and makes their unmatched power sets some of the most dangerous in the Marvel Universe.
Since he’s Professor X’s son, it might be some time before we see David Haller’s Legion reimagined for the MCU, if ever. Nevertheless, a battle between the reality-warping Legion and the Sentry, who holds the power of a thousand exploding suns, would be a cinematic spectacle that we would love to see play out on-screen. This would be made even more poignant by emphasizing the battles that these two heroes fight with their own minds, too, though Legion’s sheer power level means he would surely come out on top.
