The Funniest Movie of 2011 Just Hit Netflix (And It’s as Hilarious as Ever)

Netflix’s movie catalog just got a lot funnier with the arrival of one of the most hilarious movies from 2011. Coming towards the end of the Judd Apatow era of comedy, the 2010s saw a decline in comedy’s box-office dominance but still gave way to some memorable titles in the genre, such as Easy A, Ted, and Pitch Perfect. Several beloved comedies from the decade, including Grown Ups and Horrible Bosses, are already streaming on Netflix, and the streamer’s comedy library just got a little bigger with the arrival of one of the funniest comedies from the 2010s.

Netflix subscribers looking for a laugh can now stream Bridesmaids. Paul Feig’s star-studded 2011 comedy joined Netflix’s streaming library on September 1st alongside a rush of new arrivals. The movie stars Kristen Wiig as Annie Walker, a down-on-her-luck single woman who is asked to serve as maid of honor at her best friend’s (Maya Rudolph) wedding. Unable to say no and determined to outdo an overbearing bridesmaid, Annie leads the hodgepodge of bridesmaids – also including Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, and Melissa McCarthy – down the wild road to the wedding.

Why You Should Watch Bridesmaids

If you’re looking for a timeless laugh, then Bridesmaids is absolutely the movie for you. The movie doesn’t shy away from gross-out gags and raunchy humor, a formula most often associated with male-led comedies like The Hangover, and features some of the most memorable and hilarious scenes in comedy, including the disastrous dress-fitting and wedding toasts scenes. To this day, Bridesmaids is laugh-out-loud fun, but the movie’s laughs are cemented on the backbone of a heartfelt story about female friendship and adulthood. Bridesmaids also features stellar performances from its cast and helped catapult McCarthy to stardom.

Bridesmaids was released in 2011 to massive success. Produced against a budget of $32 million, the movie grossed over $306 million worldwide. It was also well-received by critics and audience members alike and holds a “Certified Fresh” distinction on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% critics’ score and 76% audience rating. The film picked up numerous awards nominations, with its Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay Oscar nominations making it the first Apatow-produced film to be nominated for an Academy Award. Bridesmaids was a groundbreaking success in a male-dominated comedy genre and helped pave the way for other female-led comedies that followed, such as The Heat, Girls Trip, and Booksmart.
