Ready Player One opened on Thursday, allowing Warner Bros. to take advantage of the Easter vacation weekend with the film’s release.

Ready Player One earned $17 million on Friday and will earn $40 million over the typical three-day weekend. Even accounting for the extra day at the box office, Ready Player One is outperforming early tracking expectations, which predicted the film would make no more than $42 million in its first weekend.

Ready Player One will Spielberg’s fifth-highest box office opening of his career.

The film also opened internationally, bringing in $128 million from foreign markets, bringing its global total to $181.2 million. The film opened with 60 percent of the total box office revenue in China, taking in $14 million and the number one spot in the market. The film is projected to have an opening weekend total of $25.2 million in China. It will become the third highest Chinese opening for a Warner Bros. film ever.

The record-breaking Marvel movie Black Panther slides down to the third place spot in its seventh weekend at the box office. The film is earned $11 million over the weekend. Black Panther is currently the fifth-highest grossing movie of all time, beating every other Marvel film and superhero movie and trailing not far behind Jurassic World.

Pacific Rim Uprising falls from first place in its opening weekend to fifth place in its second weekend. The film is expected to earn just $9 million, which is a 70 percent decline from the film’s opening weekend. By comparison, the original Pacific Rim dropped just 57 percent from first weekend to second weekend. Uprising is showing a stronger international performance, earning over $120 million to bring its global total to $160 million.

But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world.

When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
