4 Star Trek Characters the Next Movie Should Leave Behind And Not Even Mention

It’s a good time to be a science fiction franchise. Denis Villeneuve is taking Frank Herbert’s Dune series and turning it into an epic trilogy that dominates the conversation due to its impressive cast and massive scale. Even properties that have been struggling in recent years are seeing a resurgence. Both Alien and Predator have released successful projects recently, and all signs point to another massive crossover between the two coming sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, some sci-fi franchises are still struggling to get things right, despite bringing talent into the fold to get the ship back on course.

Star Trek is thriving on the small screen, with the Paramount+ streaming service being full of original series that explore previously undiscovered corners of the galaxy and beyond. However, the movie side of the franchise is a very different story. There are numerous reasons why Star Trek is struggling to get back into theaters, but it’s going to happen eventually, and when it does, these four characters shouldn’t be around.

4) Khan

Nearly ten years have passed since the last majorย Star Trekย movie,ย Star Trek: Beyond, yet rumors persistย about the band getting back together for a fourth installment. Whether that happens or not, everyone would be better off if Khan were not part of Starfleet’s next big-screen adventure. It’s still hard to shake off that poorly hidden twist from Star Trek: Into Darkness, and any attempts to make things right will feel like the powers that be are afraid to try anything new.

3) Spock

While Star Trek‘s movie division has been messing around, the TV one has been getting serious. Paramount has released several critically acclaimed series, including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which features a version of Spock, played by Ethan Peck. While Zachary Quinto does a great job in his three appearances, there’s something about Peck’s performance that makes him stand out in a crowded show. The best course of action would be to let Peck do his thing and find another Vulcan to take Spock’s place in the movies.

2) Captain Kirk

Captain Kirk in the chair in Star Trek.

Like his buddy Spock, James Kirk also has a role inย Strange New Worlds, albeit a much smaller one. The lack of exposure to the future captain of the Enterprise would make it seem like he’s ready for another shot on the big screen, but that’s not necessarily the case. With the shows already covering the years before Kirk takes over the Enterprise, there’s not much story left for the hotshot captain. It’s time to hand the keys to another go-getter, one that can follow in Kirk’s footsteps without covering the same ground.

1) George Kirk

George Kirk shocked in Star Trek.

One of the major things holding up the next Star Trek movie is the story. For years, reports claimed that the fourth installment in the universe J.J. Abrams started would be a time travel tale that saw Kirk go back and meet his father, George. However, that idea seems like a way to capitalize on Chris Hemsworth’s fame rather than something that would actually push the franchise forward. If leaving George back in the past means the train can get moving again, there’s not much else to think about.
