3 Great Star Wars Villains That Need to Return to the Franchise (More Than Darth Vader)

The Star Wars franchise has long been known for its compelling villains. Letโ€™s be real; at times, it even feels like the villains have a bigger fan base than the heroes, at least when it comes to Star Wars. Some of the best characters (and villains) have been left out of the live-action Star Wars tales, while others have only made the briefest of appearances before fading away. We donโ€™t want to see that happen; we want to see these compelling characters on the big screen, offering all the threat and menace they can muster. As such, weโ€™re still crossing our fingers for the return of certain characters.

Truthfully, some of the best villains hail from the Legends continuity, and in many cases, fans are still waiting for their favorites to be pulled back into the Disney canon line. There is, of course, a danger that Disney will go the overly nostalgic route and bring back Darth Vader again, but we need some variation. Admittedly, given their popularity, it feels inevitable that LucasFilm’s creatives will turn to these Legends characters, but the wait has been unbearable. However, more recent developments have given us reason to hope, so now may be a good time to get caught up on some Star Wars lore.

3) Darth Plagueis

“Star Wars: The Acolyte” reveals Sith Lord Darth Plagueis in Finale

Thanks to The Acolyte, the name of Darth Plagueis has been coming up more frequently in conversation. Darth Plagueis is a Muun Dark Lord of the Sith, also known as Darth Plagueis the Wise. He gained a particular reputation for his ability to thwart death. Though, as one might imagine, that knack only lasted for so long (and is quite possibly a lie fabricated by Palpatine).

Darth Plagueis’ story goes the way one might expect when it comes to the cycle of Sith Lords. He personally trained Darth Sidious, who we all know would later become Emperor Palpatine. As such, his lore has always had a heavy impact on the live-action films.

This brings us to the finale of The Acolyte, which teased the return of Darth Plagueis. The scene unfolds in a dark cave, revealing the characteristic features of the Muun species. The presence of Darth Plagueis here implies that he is Qimirโ€™s master, showcasing even more ways that Darth Plagueis has impacted the Star Wars universe. While The Acolyte may be cancelled, there is still more potential to explore this character.

2) Durge

Before the long-running animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars series came into being, there was another, much shorter, Clone Wars series. Also known as Genndy Tartakovskyโ€™s Star Wars: Clone Wars, the animated series offered a new look at one of the major events in Star Wars canon. However, itโ€™s important to note that, sadly, Genndy Tartakovskyโ€™s Star Wars: Clone Wars is not considered canon (anymore). This includes the characters introduced or portrayed in this version.

Many characters introduced in this series have since become canon, including the likes of Asajj Ventress. So weโ€™re playing the waiting game to see when Durge makes his formal introduction into the lore. Durge is a fierce Genโ€™Dai bounty hunter who tracked targets during the Clone Wars and Imperial Era.

It would be an understatement to say that Durge earned a reputation for being unkillable and unstoppable during this time. He faced off against Jedi and clones alike, including Obi-Wan, and walked away to tell his story. Since the animated series, Durge has begun making some appearances in the comics, even coming across Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra (Doctor Aphra to most).

1) Darth Nihilus

Darth Nihilus is a (human) Sith Lord who hails from the Jedi Civil War era. His story was made famous in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, and he is an entirely different type of Sith. Once upon a time, Darth Nihilus was a human, but that was before he lost everything. He was there when the Mass Shadow Generator superweapon was kicked off during the Battle of Malachor V. While he survived, Darth Nihilus was forever changed, walking away from the battlefield craving force energy. Thus, he would eventually become known as the Lord of Hunger.

While Darth Nihilus may have started out as human, he eventually became something else entirely, more void than man. He would travel the universe, consuming worlds as he went. In other words, heโ€™s the darkest representation of what the Dark Side has to offer, and thatโ€™s saying something.

Admittedly, adding Darth Nihilus to any Star Wars live-action project would heavily tip the scales, but that isnโ€™t necessarily a bad thing. Star Wars loves to create insurmountable odds for its heroes to face up against, and itโ€™s hard to think of odds more terrifying than facing down Darth Nihilus.

What characters are you hoping to see make their way back into Star Wars canon or the live-action films?
