Marvel Studios’ favorite pastime is to throw people off the scent. There have been countless times when a major rumor about the Marvel Cinematic Universe starts making the rounds, but a bombshell drops that ensures it doesn’t pick up much steam. The biggest reveal in recent years, which still has the Internet in a frenzy, is the return of Robert Downey Jr. The man who’s become synonymous with Iron Man is back, and he isn’t stepping into a red and gold suit of armor. No, he’ll be donning a different kind of armor in Avengers: Doomsday as Victor von Doom, aka Doctor Doom.

It’s a pleasant surprise to have Downey Jr. back after so many years, but the real shocker is the potential return of another original Avengers actor. Despite Chris Evans’ denial of any knowledge about Steve Rogers’ role in the next Avengers movie, the signs point to him being ready to take up the shield again. Here are four theories that could explain Evans’ unexpected return as Captain America in Doomsday.
4) Doctor Doom Wants Revenge

Reddit is a great place to look up Marvel theories, as the users on the platform always cook up something believable. One of their latest ideas claims that Doom is hunting down anyone responsible for an incursion, which is essentially a universe-destroying event that’s caused by multiverse travel. Steve may have created an incursion when he traveled back in time to be with Peggy Carter in Avengers: Endgame, putting him on Doom’s radar.
3) Captain America Is on the Wrong Side of the Fight

If Doom isn’t looking for the original Captain America, he could be after a variant of the hero that believes in his cause. There have been quite a few rumors about Doomsday‘s villain putting together a team of his own, and if that comes to pass, an evil version of Steve, maybe one that’s loyal to HYDRA, is a great candidate. Seeing the face of the former leader of the Avengers would shock the MCU’s heroes to their core just as much as seeing Tony Stark’s mug.
2) Time Travel Is Back on the Table

It’s anyone’s guess as to what the plot of Doomsday will be. Sure, the multiverse is going to play a big part in the proceedings, but there’s a chance the MCU hits up another reliable plot device that did the job once before: time travel. If Doomsday has a MacGuffin on the level of the Infinity Stones, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes could travel back in time to retrieve and run into some familiar faces, such as the Star-Spangled Man.
1) The Avengers Need a Friendly Face of Their Own

Doomsday‘s cast is stacked, to say the least. Members of the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four will all appear before the credits roll, but it might take more than them to put down Doom. With rumors about a variant of T’Challa circulating, it’s equally plausible that a Captain America variant appears, offering his assistance in a time of need. It would be a nice way to show that Steve is still out in the multiverse, ready to put it all on the line.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
