Not all horror movies are great Halloween movies, right? This time of year is always best for watching horror, but there is a specific kind of film within the horror genre (and sometimes outside of it) that really go for the exact eerie vibes of the Halloween season. Tim Burton has always been a master at capturing the spirit of Halloween, but there’s one specific entry in his filmography that feels more accurate to the season than his others.

The movie in question is Sleepy Hollow, the 1999 gothic horror fantasy starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. This movie is dripping in Halloween goodness, much like the town from which it gets its name. From the chillingly barren trees to the deep red blood effects, Sleepy Hollow feels like Halloween season brought to life, and it has finally returned to the streaming service it most often calls home.
This month, Paramount+ brought Sleepy Hollow back to its streaming lineup, making it easily accessible for all fans this Spooky Season.
A Perfect Halloween Movie
If you’re not familiar, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is an 1820 story from Washington Irving that has been retold and adapted countless times over the last 200 years. The story follows Ichabod Crane, who becomes the target of the mysterious and deadly Headless Horseman, an undead soldier who was decapitated by a cannonball.
Burton’s version of the film features Depp as Ichabod Crane, this time a police constable from New York who travels to Sleepy Hollow to investigate deaths potentially related to the Headless Horseman legend. Ricci plays Katrina, the woman who Crane falls for and the daughter of one of the town’s most prominent residents. While Ray Park is the one portraying the Headless Horseman for most of the movie, the scenes of the completed soldier are played by Christopher Walken. Those scenes with Walken have endured as perhaps the best and most memorable of the entire movie.
