Tom Holland has just provided an update on Peter Parker’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after 2026’s upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, making his return even more uncertain. Holland first appeared as Spider-Man in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, taking over from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to bring the iconic wall-crawler into the MCU proper. Since then, Spider-Man has become one of the MCU’s most important heroes, headlining his own solo trilogy and fighting as a member of the Avengers, but his future in the franchise isn’t yet clear.

“In terms of my future in the character beyond this film, I don’t know the answer to that,” Tom Holland suggested to LADbible during a conversation this September while speaking about the development of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. “I think with anything, it’s all about what’s in front of you, and right now what’s in front of us isย Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and focusing on making that movie worthy of the last film.” Holland’s comments cast doubt on him returning as Spider-Man after Brand New Day’s release on July 31, 2026, contrary to what we’ve previously heard.
What Spider-Man’s Future Could Look Like After Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day started filming in the United Kingdom at the start of August, with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’s Destin Daniel Cretton directing the much-anticipated sequel. After Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed over $1.9 billion at the box office in 2021, and changed Spider-Man’s story significantly, there’s a lot of pressure on Brand New Day to deliver a similarly-powerful narrative. Set photos and videos have shown off Tom Holland’s skills as the wall-crawler, but we’re less certain whether he’ll be reprising the role after his upcoming sequel.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures previously suggested that Tom Holland would return to headline a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies in the MCU after No Way Home. Holland’s new comments seem to imply that this isn’t the case, however. There has also been speculation that Holland could reprise the role in the Russo brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday, releasing in December 2026, but, again, this hasn’t been officially confirmed. It’s very possible that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could end Peter Parker’s story, perhaps replacing him with another version of Spider-Man such as Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Woman or Miles Morales’ Spider-Man.
Tom Holland has been taking a hands-on role with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, revealing he helped in “designing the suit” and “actively sifting through the internet and trying to best understand what it is that the fans want.” His passion for delivering a movie “for [the fans]” raises hopes that Brand New Day will be a thrilling addition to his MCU history, and cements hopes that this won’t be his last time swinging through the streets of New York. We’d love for Holland to portray Spider-Man for many more years, but only time will tell what the future holds.
