Transformers 5 has earned about $65 million in its first weekend of release – which is, again, a new low for the franchise. What is surprising, however, is just how well The Last Knight in terms of 3D ticket sales.
An official press release from 3D company RealD Inc. reveals that Transformers: The Last Knight earned about 67% of its worldwide gross in ticket sales from 3D showings of the film. That translates to about $178 million of the $265 million total the film took in.
In terms of individual markets, the breakdown for percentage of Transformers 5 3D tickets sold in each market went like this:
- China – 99%
- Russia – 58%
- Germany – 86%
- Hong Kong – 41%
- The Netherlands – 100%
3D movies can get a bad wrap, as some moviegoers feel incensed at having to pay extra for the format. Clearly, international audiences like the novelty a little bit more than US domestic audiences – which is good news for Transformers: The Last Knight, as it seems to need every advantage possible fatten its profits. As we previously reported, this fifth and final installment with director Michael Bay has been the worst reviewed chapter of the franchise, yet.
