The Season 2 finale of Marvel’s Agent Carter ended on quite the cliffhanger, one that seems like its setting up a major mystery for Season 3. So now the question on everybody’s mind is…
Who shot Chief Thompson?
We don’t have a whole lot to go on just yet, only that the killer appeared to be male and was after the mysterious file on Peggy Carter that Thompson got from his friend in British intelligence.
Here’s our five best guesses.
The Council
The Council of Nine took several heavy blows throughout this season of Agent Carter, but that doesn’t mean they’re down and out. If the Council is anything like the Secret Empire of the Marvel Comics Universe, they’ve got members across the country and in high ranking positions, and the discovery of a hidden key in the Council’s lapel pin certainly suggests the show isn’t done with the organization just yet.
Perhaps one of the higher ups of the Council decided to take Chief Thompson out and obtain some leverage on Agent Carter, killing two birds with one stone.
Vernon Masters
Masters was conspicuously absent from the entire finale, and perhaps we’re expected to assume that he died in the Zero Matter incident at the waste management facility.
However, Wilkes and Frost both survived. Sure, they both possessed Zero Matter, but Frost had infused Masters with the stuff prior to Wilkes’ interruption, Peggy and her team didn’t even notice Frost in the rubble when they first inspected the facility, so perhaps Masters was somewhere survived unnoticed as well and decided to get revenge for Thompson’s betrayal.
Leviathan
The Russian organization called Leviathan was talked up a lot in the first season of Agent Carter, but we didn’t actually see much of them. Perhaps Agent Carter’s success against Doctor Fenhoff has put her on the group’s radar.
While Thompson’s killer appeared to be a man, we know that Dottie Underwood is still out there somewhere, and Fenhoff is still in custody, which means Leviathan has loose ends that need tying up.
Michael Carter
Let’s go full conspiracy theory here. This season, we learned a bit about Peggy’s brother, Michael, and how his death during the war inspired her to join the fight herself. But what if Michael didn’t die?
What if Michael was recruited by one espionage organization or another? Is it even possible that the “M. Carter” seen in the Thompson acquired file is referencing Michael rather than Margaret? Maybe Michael killed Thompson to cover up his own existence, and maybe we’ll see more of him in the future.
Dominic Fortune
Maybe we’ve been going about this all wrong. Perhaps Thompson’s death isn’t the result of a known player looking for revenge or trying get the upper hand on Peggy. Maybe it’s the introduction of a new player into the game.
We know that Dominic Fortune (played by Delroy Lindo) will appear in the upcoming Marvel’s Most Wanted. Perhaps Thompson was killed by a young Fortune, and this will serve as our introduction to the character.
This would also mean that the cliffhanger could be resolved in Most Wanted if Agent Carter doesn’t get picked up for a third season.
