So here's one that's a bit out of left field: Avid Arad, producer of The Amazing Spider-Man films and former CEO of Marvel Studios, is producing a new film based on China's famed Terracotta Warriors, according to the South China Morning Post. The Terracotta Warriors are the famed sculptured army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. They were buried along with the emperor in in 210-209 BC in order to protect the emperor in the afterlife. The film – said to be named either Super Terracotta Warriors or Rise of the Terracotta Warriors – will see the warriors brought to life in modern times as aliens attempt to invade the planet. Arad will be producing the film in conjunction with The Shanghai Film Group. The state-owned company is the second largest movie production studio in china. The news comes amidst other news, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that the Shanghai Film Group is nearing a deal with Paramount and Marvel Studios to team—up on such major projects as the Iron Man and Spider-Man franchises. The corporate deals speak to how powerful China is becoming in the motion picture industry, and the fact that a crazy, sci-fi Terracotta Warriors movie is in the works speaks to just how powerful the Chinese market is.
