SyFy has hired Another Earth director Mike Cahill to direct the pilot for its adaptation of Lev Grossman's best-selling book trilogy, The Magicians, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Magicians is about a boy named Quentin Coldwater who grew up with a fixation on series of fantasy novels set in the magical land of Fillory, not altogether unlike the Narnia of C.S. Lewis' popular series. Quentin is cast as being kind of like Harry Potter, if Harry Potter were college-aged and full of existential ennui. After graduating high school, Quentin finds himself attending a school for magicians, called Barkebills, and discovering and entirely new world that he had always hoped existed. Whether or not he's mature enough to appreciate it is another matter.

"We were impressed with Mike's feature work and his passion for this material," said Bill McGoldrick, executive vice president of original content at Syfy. "We are very excited that he will be the one bringing The Magicians to life."

The script for the pilot is being written by John McNamara (Prime Suspect) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural), and produced by Michael London (Milk). The pilot is expected to go into production later this year.

SyFy announced that they would be adapting The Magicians for television earlier this year, alongside several comic book adaptations, including DMZ, Letter 44, Ronin, Clone and Pax Romana.
