New Blade Runner 2049 Behind-The-Scenes Footage Shown At CinemaCon

Earlier this afternoon at the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon, new behind-the-scenes footage from Blade Runner 2049 was shown. Our own Brandon Davis among the attendees who watched it, and now he has written up a detailed description.

Director Denis Villeneuve took the stage with two members of its supporting cast, Jared Leto and Ana de Armas, to discuss Blade Runner 2049.

"Blade Runner is a very special movie," Leto told the crowd. "There are very few films in my life that has struck me as deep as the original Blade Runner. This is an incredible group of people." He added, "There are very few films that come together like this. I consider one of the greats honors of my life to be a part of this film and to work with these people."

De Armas chimed in, "I can truly says this movie was 35 years in the making."

"I was truly honored to take the baton for Ridley," Villeneuve said. "It was by far the most intense and exciting cinematic experience of my life."

One that was out of the way, a behind-the-scenes video was introduced, showing how the film was made as well new footage from the film itself. It begins with Ryan Gosling's LAPD Officer K putting a quarter in a machine that creates a hologram. He explores a very yellow, abandoned casino. Finding a piano, he plays a key before Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard emerges with a gun. Gosling has questions.

"The story, the themes, the stunning visual elements, it was a pleasure getting back to the world of Blade Runner again," Ford says in the video. We then see a clip of him being flown "home."

Ridley Scott appears and says he could never imagine how iconic his original film would be.

Leto says, "I think Blade Runner 2049 is a testament to the original movie and the characters that were created." Then his character's name is revealed to be 'Wallace.'

More behind-the-scens footage is shown, featuring the production crew working on a scene that has insane lighting patterns and set pieces. "We're marrying the familiar with the slight divergent," the art director says.

The video concludes with footage form the film. Gosling hears he is special. He looks at a book as he is told his story isn't over. He flies through the world as vibrant colors flash off of his screen. He sees the white bodies in glass cases. Someone finds Gosling at Ford's estate. Later, he is locked away, staring at a small wooden horse. "This is impossible," he says.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

The cast features Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, and Jared Leto.

The sequel to the 1982 original is being directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners). It's written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, and succeeds the initial story by Fancher and David Peoples based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will produce along with Johnson and Kosove.
