Greg Ballard, the mayor of Indianapolis, IN, issued a decree yesterday officially recognizing Free Comic Book Day, which takes place today. The annual event, held on the first Saturday in May, allows fans new and old to go to comic book retailers around the country and take their pick from dozens of free comics printed just for today. Publishers of all sizes participate, with the largest publishers often tying their exclusive releases into big, upcoming stories in the hopes of bringing fans back for more. The procalamation, pictured at right, recognizes not only twelve years of Free Comic Book Day, but the longer-term contribution of comics to children's literacy and art appreciation.
