Game Of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Explains Littlefinger's Relationship With Sansa Stark

Sansa and Petyr

On last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, “Mockingbird,” the love triangle surrounding Petyr Baelish played out to dramatic effect when Lysa Arryn definitely aware of the some of the more complicated emotions that Petyr has for Sansa Stark.

Petyr Baelish was fostered at Riverrun with both Lysa and her sister, Catelyn. Littlefinger loved Catelyn, but Catelyn was promised to Brandon Stark and eventually married Ned Stark after Brandon died. Petyr’ love never waned, and he admitted to Sansa in the episode that he arranged the assassination of Joffrey at least partly as payback for what happened to Cat at the Red Wedding. While Petyr has acted paternally toward Sansa up until this point, he then kissed her in the snow.

It seems the relationship between Sansa and Petyr is a bit more complicated than it may have seemed at first. Creator George R.R. Martin explained Petyr’s feelings in a new video released by HBO.

“Sometimes he sees Sansa and she’s the daughter he never had,” Martin says. “The daughter that he might have had with Cat…But at other times, he detaches himself from that and he’s less Petyr and more Littlefinger and she’s just another piece in the game of thrones…Yet, other times, she’s not Cat’s daughter, she’s young Cat. She’s his teenage fantasies returned again.”
