Littlefinger

George R.R. Martin, creator of A Song of Ice and Fire and co-executive producer of Game of Thrones, spoke about Littlefinger's role in the Purple Wedding in a new video released by HBO. Martin reminds viewers that Littlefinger was sent to the Vale to marry Lysa Arryn and ally her with the Lannisters at the end of Game of Throne's third season. "So he's safely gone," says Martin, "and when bad things start happening in King's Landing, well he can't be blame, he left weeks ago. Meanwhile, he has a cat's-paw in King's Landing: Ser Dontos the Red, the drunken knight that Sansa saved from Joffrey's wrath in the first episode of season two…what [Sansa] doesn't know, and hopefully the audience doesn't know until they see it act out, he's actually acting as a cat's-paw for Littlefinger, who has set this whole thing in motion. So when the wedding occurs, and the bodies are flying, the accusations are flying, Sansa has disappeared. Where has she gone?  Well, in the middle of the chaos and the confusion, Ser Dontos has smuggled her…Now, Sansa is with Petyr Baelish on her way north." In last night's episode of Game of Thrones, "Oathkeeper," Littlefinger reaveled his role in Joffrey's death to Sansa, as well as revealing Sansa's own. Sansa had unwittingly smuggled the poison used to kill the king into the wedding in the guise of an amethyst on the necklace given to her by Ser Dontos. Littlefinger initially claims that he did it simply to confound everyone, but Sansa sees through that lie. Littlefinger seems to be making a play for power by helping his "new friends" get rid of Joffrey. Those "new friends" are heavily implied to be House Tyrell. Game of Thrones airs Sunday nights at 9 PM ET on HBO.
