Acclaimed cartoonists Jeff Lemire and Paolo Rivera will work together with Unity's Matt Kindt to launch a new, stand-alone series for Valiant Entertainment, the publisher announced today via Comic Book Resources.

While both are still working for the Big Two -- Lemire as a writer at DC and Rivera as an artist for Marvel -- the "prestige format" series will bring them together to create a story that Valiant compares to Mark Waid and Alex Ross's Kingdom Come.

"I've been super-honored to work with a crew of guys and girls who don't treat this as the fourth or fifth most important book that they're working on," Valiant editor-in-chief Warren Simons said in a recent CBR interview. "They really put their heart and soul into it, which is why we've been able to build relationships with creators that last for years, and they continue to come back and work with us."

Rivera, upon his departure from Daredevil, had said that he intended to focus on primarily creator-owned work but may finally accept some non-Marvel work-for-hire. It could be, given that there's no explanation for quite what this book is, that it falls into either category,  although arguably the latter is more likely since Valiant is very much in the business of developing its many intellectual properties.

Tomorrow, CBR will have more details on the project, and then at Comic Con International: San Diego in two weeks, there should be a ton more information and maybe some art, as the publisher are planning on presenting the title to the press.
