Next year, King Kong is going to make an impressive comeback thanks to Legendary Pictures. The mythical ape was introduced to fans decades ago, but the studio is ready to reinvent the primate for new audiences. To do so, Legendary Pictures brought in a slew of all-star talent to populate their blockbuster, and Tom Hiddleston is one of the film’s biggest selling points. Until now, details about the actor’s character have been kept quiet as to prevent undue spoilers, but a recent tweet may have changed that. Not long ago, the official Twitter for Kong: Skull Island gave fans an inside-look at Hiddleston’s character with an animated featurette.
The short clip gives a look at the Monarch file created for Hiddleston’s character, James Conrad. The mysterious organization was introduced back in 2014’s Godzilla, so the science-based organization may be the connective thread looping King Kong to Godzilla. The in-depth file has several redacted lines, but there is still plenty of information.
According to the file, Conrad is a decorate military man who served in the British Special Air Service between 1965-1971. It was there that he gained the rank of Captain, and Conrad was even loaned to the Australian Special Forces for a brief period of time during the Vietnam conflict. Of course, fans are not too surprised by his intensive military background; The file describes Conrad as having “excellent physical health” and a talented hunter/tracker.
However, there is an anomaly within the file. Towards the end, fans can see that Conrad is said to suffer from “manifestations of shellshock.” Today, the term is better known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and it would seem likely that Hiddleston acquired the psychosis during his time in the military. If he’s been hired or vetted by Monarch for the King Kong expedition, then Conrad’s case may not be too severe, but the veteran has never encountered massive apes before. Only time will tell how King Kong exasperates the protagonist’s condition, but it will surely do no good.
